Tunisia: A Failed Mission of Democracy

When Tunisia toppled their oppressive government in the early stages of 2011, the country hoped for the elusive democracy to move their country to the promised land, and make situations better for everyone involved inside of Tunisia. And at first, they did succeed.

Tunisia’s new type of government began to instantly change the surroundings of Tunisia in regards to its social behavior and basic inalienable rights. The freedom of speech instantly was formed due to high demand of the citizens, and soon enough, free elections began rampantly spreading across the nation, giving those in the lower or middle class hope of being equally represented regardless of their monetary values. Things were finally looking up.

However, what has happened to Tunisia?

The country was looked upon as inspiration for one of democracy’s greatest success stories of the modern era. However, the current government is under fire by the public for being corrupt within, which is the one aspect of a democracy that absolutely cannot happen.

Now, an economic crisis matching the already politically chaotic government has forced poverty rates in Tunisia to rise unpredictably. People outside according to the New York Times “cannot even buy a sandwich”.

The new, democratically elected president Kais Saied vowed on July 25th that he would attack corruption at the source, and delete it from Tunisia’s government. The question is, will this be a true promise, or yet another politically driven lie?
