OP-ED: Our Current Situation

With Omicron raging on, the international community is unsure of what we are to do next.

Although it seems through statistics that the worst may be over, what is it to say that there is a variant worse than Omicron? We’ve been through Delta, Omicron, and other strains of COVID that have issued major blows economically. Businesses continue to shut down and wither away, especially locally-owned businesses, leaving only the major companies still standing. Poverty and unemployment continue to rise, and things aren’t getting better.

Of course, we can’t just blame Joe Biden. Obviously, it’s been a few decades since the world endured such a nasty virus that affected so many communities and countries. The Spanish Influenza is the only case that I consider as severe as the current situation, and even then, the Spanish Flu was contained within two to three years. Who knows when COVID will finally settle down enough that the international community will not have to care as much?

It’s gonna take a while for countries to regain their economic values pre-pandemic wise. Think about Japan and China for instance. Both countries celebrated heavily when they won their bids for the summer and winter Olympics respectively. However, Japan and China will suffer heavy losses when dust clears post-Olympics. Japan even had to delay their games a year due to the raging pandemic. China will hold their winter games at the planned time, but with very limited attendance fan-wise. Along with the boycotting of some countries, China will also suffer financial losses.

It comes to show how important it is now to unify as people. Only together will we get through this together.
