On a cloudy day in England, home to one of the world’s most prestigious tournaments, Wimbledon’s final took place between world-ranked number one Novak Djokovic and eight-ranked Matteo Berrettini. The match lasted four sets, with Djokovic coming out on top after dropping the first set. While England focused mainly on Wembley Stadium and the delayed Euro 2020 Championship, Novak performed yet another outstanding performance to guide himself to victory. He has already won the last two Grand Slams, in the Australian Open and the French Open. If he wins the US Open, taking place in Flushing Meadows, New York, he will be one of the few men in the modern era to sweep all four major tournaments of the year.
While Djokovic hit less aces than his opponent (6-16) and committed more double faults (3-4), he was the better player back on the baseline. He won an outrageous amount of points when receiving Berrettini’s serve (61-38), making him win more break-points given to him (6-2). Yet ultimately, it was Berrettini’s win percentage on his second serve that effectively cost him the match. His only stat that was gruesome to look upon on paper, compared to “the Joker”, the Italian won just 38% of his second serve points, while Serbian won an impressive 58%. If Berrettini could have been more efficient in his second serve throughout the match, the outcome may have been very different.
With his Wimbledon triumph, the 34-year-old has won his 20th career Grand Slam, tying Swiss legend Roger Federer and the “King of Clay”, Spaniard Rafael Nadal. It is implied that the deadlock between the three could be broken in New York, practically settling the conversation for the G.O.A.T, or greatest of all time. Both Nadal and Federer have had poor seasons in 2021, plagued by multiple injuries. The battle shall be quite interesting in September.
Across the world of sports, a strong Italian side led by Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne blocked England’s path to victory, denying England the chance of bringing delight to their home stand. Italy instead claimed their first International trophy since the 2006 World Cup. However, both teams played absolutely brilliantly throughout the duration of the tournament. Both England and Italy had been deemed favorites to lift the trophy at the start of the tournament, and both sides did not disappoint.
England and Italy ensured their knockout round births when they both finished top of their group. From there, England managed to take down 2014 World Cup Champions Germany 2-0, before thrashing upstarts Ukraine 4-0 in the quarterfinals. Afterwards, they managed to defeat the Denmark national team 2-1 in extra time to book themselves a place in the final. Italy meanwhile defeated foes Belgium and Austria 2-1 before downing Spain in a penalty shootout. The final score for the match was 1-1, with Italy winning in penalty kicks, 3-2.
In the NBA Finals, the Phoenix Suns were defeated by the Milwaukee Bucks 120-100, halting momentum gained from their past two playoff wins. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 41 en rout to a game 3 victory, yet the Suns still lead the series, 2-1.
