In a winter blizzard that residents of New York are calling “once in a generation”, tens of thousands of people have been affected in devastating ways. With places in Buffalo having “as much as 49 inches of snow”, the death toll has become surprising high in the city of approximately 270,000. Officials have reported that 14 individuals have been found death outside, with the same number of deaths accounted for in other miscellaneous causes.
Last night, President Joe Biden allowed the state of New York to go into a state of emergency declaration, further emphasizing the impact this storm has had on the citizens.
The freezing temperatures and the harsh weather has been a huge blow to others along the east coast, with flight cancellations galore making this past Christmas weekend absolutely abysmal for families. Power outages along the New England region also have made national headlines. The New York Times reported that as of Monday afternoon, “more than 17,000 homes and businesses” in Maine have been without standard power. The accumulated total is almost certainly expected to rise as long as the snow remains. Erie county in New York has 11,000 and counting without electricity.
Recovery efforts are slow but increasing as of the latest. Snow has officially stopped in Buffalo but the cold temperatures certainly will not help the cause. A driving ban has just been issued as well throughout the city to assist in faster clearing of roads.
