Denying the New York crowd had to have felt good for Jannik Sinner, who won his first career US Open on September 8th. Facing the upstart American Taylor Fritz, Sinner easily dispatched him in straight sets. It was a culminating victory for Sinner, whose shortcomings at Wimbledon and the French Open made his hard court victory even sweeter.
Sinner’s had the most success on the hard court surface, winning his maiden “Grand Slam” title this year at the Australian Open. That victory, a five-set, comeback victory over Daniil Medvedev, truly cemented Sinner as the face of the future of tennis. Down two sets, Sinner would storm back, winning the last three sets 6-4, 6-4, and 6-3.
At the US Open however, it was a completely different story. Sinner looked to be in control throughout the entire match, winning an absurd 88% of his first serve points. He was also effective on break points, winning 6/12 compared to Fritz’s 2/7. Sinner never played an indecisive match throughout the entirety of the tournament, winning all of his matches in four sets or less. This included a rematch of Medvedev in the quarterfinals, which he handily won.
Sinner now prepares for the ATP Finals, where he will be a heavy favorite to win. Sinner was a runner-up in 2023, losing out to legend Novak Djokovic. Djokovic crashed out at this year’s US Open in just the third round.
