Early Sunday morning, Iraqi prime minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi survived a terrifying drone strike at his house, reported by the New York Times. The prime minister seems to be fine, only nursing minor wounds, such as a small wrist injury in the wake of the attack. This comes after the controversial Iraqi parliamentary election results. Maj. Gen. Saad Maan has reported that three armed drones targeted the house.
The elections, which occurred on October 10th, have been protested heavily by the public eye. Protestors, many of whom are Iranian-based, gathered near the “Green Zone”, which was the former palace of the late dictator Saddam Hussein. Iraqi forces needed to use tear gas and life ammunition to subdue the violent clashing. The protestors are complaining that the election was fraud.
The National Health Ministry has reported that over 120 civilians are currently wounded from the demonstrations.
Experts and analysts mainly agree that the drone attack was meant to warn, not kill the prime minister. What is to come can only be answered with time. Yet it serves as a stark reminder that true democracy is nearly impossible to accomplish.
