In the deadliest, most damaging hurricane in three generations, Hurricane Ian swept through the mainland of Florida swiftly, wreaking havoc in its path. Thousands of homes have been damaged beyond repair, cities near the coastline have gone days without clean water and electricity, and insurance companies argue fiercely with residents on the idea of what homeowner insurance really covers.
There have been 119 confirmed deaths caused by Hurricane Ian. The tally is expected to go up. Many of the victims have been of the elderly folk, who passed away due to drowning.
Ron Desantis, governor of the state of Florida, certainly has a lot of work to do. After hesitation by Florida’s republicans on stricter climate change measures, after Hurricane Ian hit, they want help from the president and co. Desantis especially has been criticized for his hypocrisy of not supporting a flood-packaging deal from Congress when it was initially proposed. Desantis stated that there were things in the bill that were not to his liking.
With millions of lives on the line, recovery will be painful, both economically and physically. The toll that Hurricane Ian has created certainly has been horrific to see across the world. Society watches and prays that those affected by Ian be safe and supported.
