It’s becoming a scene that is all too familiar in American society. A teenager/young adult bringing a firearm to school, with the only intention on their mind being to kill as many people as they possibly can. Obviously, this has been one of the largest predicaments in the United States for the past twenty-plus years, and continually sheds light to gun control, gun safety, and mental health.
The detained shooter is Ethan Crumbley, who was a high school sophomore at Oxford High School located in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. At just 15 years old, Crumbley fired “at least 30 shots” with his handgun, as reported by authorities, wounding six people and fatally killing four. Prosecutors are overloading the judge with several adult charges, including first-degree murder and terrorism.
The four casualties: Madisyn Baldwin (17), Tate Myre (16), Hana St. Juliana (14), and Justin Shilling (17), were all students at Oxford High School.
Ethan Crumbley was reportedly searching the web for ammunition at school on Monday, November 29th, after many districts around the country celebrated Thanksgiving break. While concerns were raised, the parents of Ethan were not fazed. A text message sent by Ethan’s mother, Jennifer even says “LOL I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught”.
This disaster could and should have been avoided. If the parents sensed their child had a legitimate chance of committing such an act of brutality and slaughter, they should have disciplined them. Now, a fifteen-year-old American boy is facing close to life in prison, the parents have been arrested for “involuntary manslaughter” and are at bail for $500,000, and four young lives have been abruptly cut short. When will this horror end?
