In an election cycle full of twists and turns, it was former President Donald Trump who was crowned the next President of the United States. A shocking and convincing win for Trump proved to be a comeback for the ages. A man who was on the brink of impeachment rising up and conquering the national political theater is simply unprecedented. It’s a major loss for the Democrats, who have lost a massive amount of Congressional ground.
While the margin of victory is slightly higher than his win against Hillary Clinton and his loss to Joe Biden, the overall historical win is not incredibly impressive. Regardless, Trump’s election win alongside a total shift in the Senate, is a 180 turnaround to the political landscape. With some House elections still too close to call, the Democrats must make up ground in the House to prevent a complete Republican control scheme in Congress.
Kamala Harris, backed by celebrities such as Taylor Swift and LeBron James, couldn’t quite find the finish line in her campaign. Thrust into the complete limelight after President Biden struggled in his debate against Trump, Harris had no choice but to rapidly begin an ascent for the top. Without an election, she was nominated as the Democrats’ choice at the National Convention. In just a little over a hundred days, she raised over $1 billion, but still managed to fall short.
There were some questionable choices in Harris’s campaign, most notably that she picked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate instead of widely popular Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. Pennsylvania would prove to be a swing state that spurred the demise of Harris’s election. It will be interesting to see how Donald Trump will fare a second time now as President.
