2024 is certainly a massive year ahead for the United States, as the presidential election will be taking place. Joe Biden, the 46th president of the United States, has announced his decision to rerun for a second term. In the previous election cycle, Biden was able to defeat 45th President Donald Trump by a comfortable margin in the electoral votes. Republicans were adamant that Trump had the election stolen from him, leading to the infamous January 6th, 2021 riot/takeover of the Capitol building. Regardless, the upcoming cycle will be huge in determining the state of the nation, on a variety of issues.
If Trump and Biden (the two that are most likely to secure nominations from their respective parties) face off in a rematch of 2020, either one of the winners will be close or over 80 years old by the time their term ends in 2028. The trend is representative of the past decade or so and has irked the familiarity of many younger Americans.
The Republicans have made waves over their selections recently, with caucuses in Iowa and New Hampshire openly in only a matter of days. Iowa especially has seen many Republican candidates trying to put in some last-minute campaigning before hitting the main trail. Ron Desantis, governor of Florida, has been known to many as Trump’s former “right-hand man.” However, once Desantis spoke with the public about his interest in running for president, he has since strayed away from Trump. That hasn’t stopped other candidates such as Nikki Haley, former ambassador for the United Nations. Haley, the daughter of Indian immigrants, has remained level-headed at times compared to her counterparts in various issues, placing her in the upper half of the Republican field.
Another candidate that is sending gradual momentum towards his campaign is Vivek Ramaswamy. Founder of a pharmaceutical company, Vivek is highly popular with the youth, utilizing social media expertly. His controversial viewpoints and charismatic swagger is resonating with some voters.
Regardless, the 2024 election is certainly something to look out for in the upcoming months.
