In a shocking revelation of events, the University of Pennsylvania’s President resigned just four days after her antisemitism hearing at Congress. This withdrawal of authority at one of the nation’s most prestigious universities had been done under mounting opposition and pressure. With huge donors of the school’s world-class Wharton Business School planning on dropping out, ex-president Elizabeth Magill had no choice but to formally resign for the sake of the school.
The discrepancies come from the Israel/Palestine Gaza conflict, where mass destruction and death have run rampant for weeks. Protests for both sides have been across the United States. However, the active calls for de-escalating military action and pro-Palestine views have split the nation. Joe Biden heavily supports Israel, as does the vast majority of the right. However, the genocide of Palestinians should be considered as well.
In an Ivy League university like UPenn, the views are both highly cultural and diverse. For some, the protests of pro-Palestine have gone too far to the point of Jewish anti-semitism, where Palestinian supporters want to see Israel gone from the area and wiped out. Others debate that the Israel supporters are at fault.
Regardless, the tensions are quite high for other schools as well, as Claudine Gay, the president of Harvard narrowly avoided a forceful resignation as well. The world must continue to fight for equality and fight for the ending of the Gaza conflict.
