Democrats Should Feel Good About the 2022 Midterms

Republicans were feeling good before the midterms. Until they weren’t. With one of the craziest, high-stakes elections in recent history, the Democrats fiercely battled back the supposed threat of a “red wave”.

In the Senate, the race is as locked up as any race. With Democrats needing just a single seat to take control, Republicans are shaking their heads in disappointment. While they put up a fierce challenge in many battleground states, the results were not all of what they were hoping for. The state of Georgia for instance is one of them. Neither side surpassing the 50% rule, both liberal representative and incumbent Reverend Raphael Warnock and conservative candidate Hershel Walker will head to a runoff vote on December 6th.

Other states have been considered as a major victory for Democrats but a blow in the face to their opposition. Pennsylvania was a state that Republicans were desperate to flip from Republican control, not just for the sake of the Senate, but perhaps to swing a bit of momentum by the time the Presidential Election of 2024 occurs. However, to the shock of the entire country, John Fetterman managed to fend off celebrity Dr. Mehmet Oz to send ripples of turmoil to both political parties.

Fetterman, who had been dealing with a stroke just weeks before the official campaign trail, was determined to at least campaign to the best of his abilities. His campaign strategy shifted into being someone that regular citizens could relate to as a friend or relative. This personal bond strategy inspired Pennsylvania deeply. Although Oz managed to claim the majority of the counties in the state, Fetterman was able to clinch crucial cities with a lot of voters, such as Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

In the end, Republicans will be licking their wounds. Democrats are on target to lose control of the House of Representatives, therefore the importance of winning the Senate cannot be overstated. Preventing full legislative control from conservatives will at least give President Joe Biden some leeway in what he and Democrats want to accomplish in the next two years.
