In the Midst of the January 6th Hearings, America is Divided

It’s been almost one-and-a-half years since the storming of the U.S. Capitol building. America was under attack that day, and the heart of democracy as we knew it could have very well been destroyed. The storming was conducted by mainly rightists and conservatives. Despite this, the event was swept under the rug by top Republican representatives. Until recently.

The House has created a selection committee to investigate what specifically happened on January 6th, and if it had anything to do with the former President Donald Trump. On the committee, there are nine representatives from the House, divided up into seven Democrats and two Republicans. After a strict blocking by the Republicans in the Senate, the House was able to pass the investigation by a margin of 222-190. Only two Republicans, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, joined the Democrats in favor of creating a January 6th panel. Both Cheney and Kinzinger are part of the nine representatives on the current panel as well.

The committee is determining whether the January 6th attacks are abled to be considered a “domestic terrorist attack”. The New York Times reports that the panel will attempt to propose recommendations and refer specific cases to the Justice Department, which could eventually lead to an offense or charge.

Since June 9th, public hearings in regards to the attack have been broadcasted internationally to the public. Democrats hope to shift blame to Republicans by proving their intimate links with many of the rioters who attended. Perhaps this may be a strategic game to secure yet another presidential victory.
