Ida Crashes into Louisiana

Eerily, on the 16th anniversary of the devastating Hurricane Katrina, a deadly storm named Hurricane Ida has wreaked havoc in the states of Mississippi and Louisiana. The storm has reached wind speeds of 150mph, tying Louisiana’s state record for highest wind speeds ever recorded since it began keeping track. Ida will certainly affect millions of lives in the southern United States, and tear the hearts of billions watching.

Katrina, one of the deadliest hurricane storms in history, decimated buildings and served as a wake-up call to be more vigilant in terms of hurricane precautions. The 2005 tragedy was classified as “category 3”, with its damage mostly being done in the heart of Louisiana, New Orleans. Overall, the storm killed 1,800 civilians, and cost the United States a fortune to pay for the city’s ruined infrastructure.

Ida, is a “category 4” hurricane, which technically means that the storm is “worse” in terms of top wind speeds. However, New Orleans and other hurricane-prone states have prepared themselves much better over the past two decades. Still, the damage will be catastrophic, and lives will be shattered forever.

After reaching the mainland of Louisiana, Ida maintained its “category 4” status for over 6 hours, until just recently being downgraded to a 3. According to CNN News, over half a million people have lost power, and the most recent statistic from Power Outage states that 720,000+ civilians are down without electricity. The hurricane is scheduled to veer eastward toward the Mideast region, but not after dying down considerably.

As the world looks on anxiously toward the action in Louisiana and others, the radiant hope of millions’ safeties are palpable. Along with Ida, hospitals are crammed with COVID patients, as Louisiana has suffered one of the worst infection rates of America. With everything going on, it will take not just one state, but the entire nation to regroup and stay strong together.
