Violence continues to ravage Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, as both countries continue to fire rockets with aggression. However, in a world currently hounded by COVID and health disasters, why are these powerhouses fighting now of all times?
The conflict between Israel and Palestine began nearly a century ago, where both sides considered Jerusalem a religious city. Both sides argued against each other, but eventually, Israel established their state to the dismay of Arab nations in the surrounding areas. The two would go on to fight each other countless times over the next seventy-plus years, including the famous Six-Day War in 1967. The U.N. (or the United Nations) had to step in often to break up massive-scale combat and tension. No matter how much the world pleaded, both sides would refuse to give up their entire heritage to the opposition.
In 1994, negotiated under former president Bill Clinton, the countries of Jordan and Israel signed a peace treaty hoping to solve their differences. Officially called the Wadi Araba Treaty, the accord attempted to increase trade and diplomatic relations with the two countries. Although successful at first, the duo brought nothing but empty promises to the table. Israel and the Palestinians would drift away, too scarred by warfare and diverse principles.
Last month, Israel began demanding the evictions of Palestinian families living in East Jerusalem. While Israel believes that the entirety of Jerusalem is their capital, Palestine considers the East part of Jerusalem as theirs to own. These actions have essentially led to present clashing. Since then, both sides have fired rockets into civilian paths, damaging millions of dollars worth of infrastructure and roadwork. The violence has injured over 1,200 non-combatants in the last week alone.
Regardless of the main issue, Israel and Palestine need to suppress their hatred for each other and start fixing their relations. Continual fighting will not solve anything, as both countries have made it clear that they will take whatever measures needed to reach a considerable conclusion. With hundreds of rockets pounding away at the walls of each region, the outcome will be inconclusive. There is nothing more to gain, yet everything to lose.
