On May 8th, 2021, India reported its worst-ever national pandemic daily death total ever, with 4,187+ people dying in one day. Many experts believe that the count is lower than expected, with “only a fraction of the bodies… getting counted by the government” (NPR News). 21 million cases have been officially reported in India, and the only inevitable question that floats around is: How much longer?
It is simply a fact that India is collapsing. One of the most densely packed countries on the planet, experts knew that India was going to take a massive hit during the high points of COVID. However, with death numbers surging, citizens are demanding a national lockdown, even though the country may not be able to survive another isolation period economically. If India’s states regulate tighter restrictions, local businesses will surely drown in a dark entanglement of bankruptcy. Along with these small communities, the country’s trade market will likely be nonexistent until India returns to a stable situation.
Even with a national crisis occurring, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to accept plans regarding a $1.8 billion parliament revamp. The plans involve better, more improved housing for the prime minister. Construction is expected to continue through the lockdown period. He had also recently allowed mass gatherings to accrue, with little or no masks passed out as safety precautions.
Globally, Narendra Modi is being put in a shady light, his people calling him selfish. Rather than halt the development of non-essential buildings, he has not done enough to keep his own country afloat. If India fails to contain the virus, the blame will be shifted to Modi. Right now, the country is in ruins, with the government rotting from the inside out.
Regardless of who the blame is on, India needs to have a quick turnaround to save the country. Hospitals are jam-packed, with no oxygen available for patients. Normal people who deserve to live are dying before getting a chance to see a medical doctor. This period for India is especially crucial. If they can settle down and deal with this catastrophe, the country will have a bright future for semi-normality. However, if the ongoing situation continues, India will face serious repercussions in its society, and could never fully recover. The country is on the path of darkness and despair.
