5G vs 4G: How Has 5G Changed History? – Aiden Yejoon Kim

Introduction to 5G

Within the rapidly changing society we live in, it is hard to keep track of the incredible technological advancements we have made as humans. One of the biggest and most economically controversial topics of today is the influence of 5G in our daily lives. 5G vigorously increases network speeds, and will enable connectivity to the Internet of Things, to live in a truly connected world.

5G is achieved by using improved technology and a conspicuously higher spectrum of frequencies than 4G. Most 4G waves have a frequency of around 3-6 gigahertz. While this may seem incredible in of itself, 5G flaunts a frequency of a whopping 26-28 gigahertz! The increased spectrum allows a larger capacity of users and devices, all over the world.

To increase the effectiveness of 5G even further, engineers are using a MIMO system. The MIMO system, otherwise known as a multiple input, multiple output system, is a new radio base design to allow faster and broader connectivity. The design features multiple antennas, allowing more people to connect to the network, and maintaining high Internet speeds.

Innovation for the Future

The most substantial, and probably the most notable, improvement 5G brings is lower latency rates, and exceptional performance, in lieu of its predecessor. 5G boasts networking speeds of 10 gigabits per second – almost 100 times faster than 4G! Additionally, with enhanced opportunity also comes increased risks. To combat this issue, network slicing is working alongside 5G, to safely encrypt small portions of data to maximize user security.

5G is slowly but surely being innovated every day. While it may just be taking its first steps, one day 5G could become its own standalone network. 5G brings insanely fast speeds for both sending and receiving data, as well as safely encrypted data for everyone in the world. All of these creative industrial innovations is what makes 5G one of technology’s greatest advancements, which will surely change the world.
